World number one Dustin Johnson pawed back a five-shot shortage before beating kindred American Jordan Spieth at the main sudden-passing gap to win the Northern Put stock in Open.

Johnson constrained the play-off by sinking a 17-foot putt at the last gap, with the two men completing on 13 under standard.

The world number one's ball gotten the edge of the opening and did a half-hover around the lip before toppling in.

"I feel the diversion's back in frame like it was driving into he Experts," he said.

"I'm swinging truly well, got a great deal of control over the golf ball and I'm feeling okay.

"Getting a win here gives me a considerable measure of certainty going into one week from now and whatever remains of the play-offs."

The competition was the first of four lucrative PGA Visit FedEx play-offs and it was Johnson's initially win since missing the primary major of the season at Augusta in April in the wake of falling ground floor.

He checked an end four-under-standard round of 66 at Glen Oaks Nation Club, New York, while Spieth - who had driven by three shots overnight - shot a 69.

Spieth's two birdies in the initial five openings had seen him lead Johnson by five shots, previously a twofold intruder at the 6th gap subsequent to finding the water.

That left him three shots clear - and four openings later the match were tied.

At the primary play-off gap, Johnson thumped his way to deal with three feet and holed the birdie putt after Spieth had missed from remove.

The combine completed four strokes clear of Spain's Jon Rahm and Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas.

"I didn't lose this competition. He won it," Spieth said.
